Dr. Knutti and the Biel Aesthetic Surgery Clinic produce informational videos, from time to time, and also participate in television programs on the subject of aesthetic/plastic surgery. The following clips are meant to answer some basic questions that members of the public might have, but they are not intended as a replacement for proper professional advice, given in person by a trusted medical practitioner.
Many thanks to our patients who kindly participated in the production of these video clips.
In this recent video by a local TV channel, Dr. Knutti discusses reports circulating in the press about certain breast implants and anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. Many thanks to Telebielingue (Biel, Switzerland) and Roland Itten, their reporter.
In the past months, a number of media reports have been published regarding so-called BIA-ALCL (breast-implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma). As stated in the following USA Food & Drug Administration (FDA) report, BIA-ALCL is NOT breast cancer, but a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which can develop in the scar tissue or fluid next to the implant, in some rare cases, and then spread through the body, affecting the immune system.
According to the report, if you currently have implants, there is no need to change your routine medical care and follow-up. You should, however, follow your doctor's advice on how to monitor your breast implants and continue with your routine mammography screening. Some discomfort is to be expected during the healing process, after the implants are put in place, but any pain or swelling beyond that process should be discussed with your surgeon.
